Eating This Popular Food Every Day Can Ward Off Age-Related Weight Gain

Spread the love

Whether we’re smashing avocados onto slices of toast, adding chunks to salads, or using them as keto-friendly replacements for healthy fats, people can’t seem to get enough of them. Not that we can blame anyone, of course — they’re delicious! And it turns out, they might also be the key to keeping weight off as we age.

According to the Daily Mail, a study from California examined the diets of 55,000 men and women over the age of 30 for the past 11 years. They weighed participants at the start of the study, half-way through, and then finally at the end. Those who reported eating at least a quarter of an avocado on a daily basis were apparently 15 percent less likely to have become overweight over time. As if we needed another reason to love this scrumptious fruit (yep, avocados are a fruit).

The study comes from the Loma Linda University in California, which is the same institution that made headlines last year for their offer to pay 1,000 people $300 to eat avocados every day. As you can imagine, they didn’t have to wait too long for plenty of hungry volunteers to sign up. Although they haven’t seemed to release details from that smaller study, the information dug up by Daily Mail certainly sounds promising.

These results also line up with another study published in October which again observed participants who ate avocado on a daily basis. In this case, they found them to be especially beneficial in lowering LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol thanks to their antioxidant properties. As you probably know, high cholesterol and weight issues are frequently linked, so it makes sense that lowering bad cholesterol can help with the number on your scale, too.

Keep in mind, this isn’t an excuse to go overboard on avocados — like any other food, no matter how healthy it is, there is still the potential for “too much of a good thing.” Luckily, experts have no problem with people eating a maximum of one full avocado on a daily basis

Now, who else is ready to dig into some guacamole?
